THE Right Reverend Dr Tom Wright will be ceremonially confirmed as the new bishop of the diocese at Durham Cathedral on Sunday.

The 90-minute ceremony will culminate in Dr Wright climbing the steps to sit on the Bishop's Throne.

Dr Wright, successor to the Rt Rev Michael Turnbull, will arrive at Palace Green only 90 minutes before the service at the end of a week-long pilgrimage walk around the diocese. He will lead a procession from the old bishop's lodgings in Durham Castle, across Palace Green. He will knock with his staff at the cathedral's Great North Door and be welcomed by the Dean of Durham, the Rt Rev Michael Sadgrove.

The new bishop will close with an address to the congregation.

The cathedral is expected to be packed with representatives from all the parishes of the diocese and among those attending will be bishops from overseas dioceses.

Members of the public wishing to attend are warned there is unlikely to be any spare seating and they may have to stand at the rear of the cathedral, behind the font. They are asked to arrive by 2.15pm for a service beginning at 3pm.

Other services on Sunday have been brought forward to allow for preparations.
