A NEW electronic community information system has been launched in Derwentside.

Community information points, based in libraries, community centres, schools and village halls, will mean that people can access a large range of information.

Sixteen points will be set up across Derwentside, offering free Internet access, videolink facilities, a large keyboard, screen reading software and support for those unused to computers.

Users will be able to access services including information on funding, online shopping, e-mail, surfing the Internet, housing, local events, benefits and activities.

The first point was launched at Leadgate Community Centre yesterday

Durham County Council and Derwentside District Council, in partnership with local communities, have developed the scheme with funding from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

Other community information points are in: Annfield Plain Library; Blackhill JFK Centre (St. Mary's Church); Burnhope Primary School; Consett Library; Consett South Enterprise and Development Centre; Consett YMCA; Craghead Village Hall; Dipton Community Centre; Hamsterley Tenants Management Office; Langley Park Church Street Community Centre; South Moor Library; Stanley CVS office; Stanley Community Centre; Stanley Hall Community Bungalow and Stanley Library.

Informal drop in sessions are also available to anyone who needs help in using the Internet.

Information about the sessions is available by telephoning Gail Pilkington or Rosemary Hoban on 0191-383 4224.
