PUPILS have been rewarded for their sporting and academic achievements at a school's annual presentation evening.

More than 200 pupils and 300 parents gathered at Longfield Comprehensive School, in Darlington, to recognise individual and team successes over the past year.

Former pupils returned to the school to collect their GCSE examination certificates, while children from all school years were presented with an array of trophies and prizes.

Longfield's former head boy, John Stephens, 16, collected the Doctor Ions Memorial Cup for the best overall GCSE results after achieving seven A stars and two A grades.

Jennifer Mulholland, 16, who has also left the school, returned to collect two prizes: the Darlington Rotary Prize for unselfish service and the June Theakston Memorial Cup for contribution to the school council.

School sports teams were also awarded a number of trophies for their success against other schools in the district. The awards included prizes in boys cross-country, girls athletics, rugby and swimming.
