A PRIMARY school in Thornaby could soon be extended to accommodate 50 more pupils.

Tedder Avenue Junior and Infant School is closing, because of the number of surplus places, so its pupils have to be moved to other schools.

The move means Bader Junior and Infant School needs extra accommodation as it has taken on 50 more pupils.

A number of extensions have been proposed to provide teaching rooms and nursery provision, a larger staff room area, as well as six more parking spaces.

But 15 residents have objected to the plans over concerns it will lead to a loss of parking in the area.

They are also concerned it will increase the threat of youngsters climbing on to the school roof and threatening residents.

It is a problem they fear will be made worse if the extension brings the school closer to their bungalows.

Members of Stockton Borough Council's planning committee will discuss the plans tomorrow, when they have been asked to approve them.

A report to the meeting said: "It is essential for Bader school to expand in size. Should planning permission not be granted, the local authority is in breach of its statutory duty to provide accommodation of Tedder school pupils by September next year.

"The increase in pupils will inevitably result in an increase in congestion around the school, but there are measures in place, such as parking bays and highway improvements, to improve the situation.

"Some objectors comment there is an issue of youths climbing on to the flat roof of the school and threatening local residents. The matter has been passed to education services to be made aware of the problems."
