A PROJECT to site a ceremonial Chinese arch in the region has moved a step closer.

Changshu Classical Gardens Architectural Engineering Company, based in Shanghai, China, has signed a £160,000 contract to provide the arch and to send a workforce to Newcastle later this year.

The arch will be constructed in Stowell Street, the heart of the city's Chinatown district.

It is hoped the 11.3-metre high traditional arch, based on a Chinese Royal Palace architectural style and decorated with glazed tiles and elaborate colour paintings, will provide a focal point for the regeneration of the area.

Councillor Ged Bell, Newcastle City Council's cabinet member for culture, tourism and sport, said: "As a cosmopolitan city, it is important to celebrate the cultures of our communities."

Thousands of pounds was raised by the Chinese community towards the project, which has also been backed by the city council, regional development agency One NorthEast, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Sponsors Club for Arts and Business.

Phil Hughes, a board member of One NorthEast said: "This gateway will provide a great opportunity for cross-cultural links by bringing Chinese craftsmen to the North-East."
