NEW light has been thrown on the life of a school following the discovery of hand-written logbooks dating from the 1860s.
The books were found at Northgate Junior School, Guisborough, east Cleveland
Headteacher Pat Anderson said: "The logbooks make fascinating reading. Some things have not changed, for example overcrowded classrooms, standards needing to be raised, boys playing truant and inspections.
"However, the children were given a holiday when the fair came to town."
The books were handed over to a representative of Guisborough Museum at an assembly.
Local MP Dr Ashok Kumar visited the school on the same day as part of MPs Back-to-School week, which aims to show children how school has changed over the years.
Dr Kumar said: "It is crucially important that youngsters in our society are taught about how education has developed in this country and about the opportunities now open to youngsters that were not present decades ago."
