Premier Division, Rovers Quoit 3 Burn Valley 2: Reigning league champions Rovers set up a dramatic championship play off with Lion thanks to Stuart Ord's last gasp winner against Burn Valley.

With timing running out and the league crown heading back to Lion, up popped Ord in the dying embers of a terrific encounter to head the ball home past Stephen Jewson.

It was the home side who opened the scoring when ex-Hartlepool player Anthony Skedd rammed home a magical 25-yard volley into the roof of the net, following good work from Andy McKenna.

Burn Valley shocked their hosts when Neil Hay pounced on hesitancy in the Rovers defence to score the equalising goal.

And, they almost took the lead when a powerful shot beat the sprawling Gary Easson, only to smash against the underside of the crossbar before being scrambled to safety.

In the second half, back came Rovers through the lively McKenna, and his natural sharpness in the penalty box put the home side 2-1 up.

Burn Valley would just not lie down and they showed great tenacity to level for a second time in the match thanks to a cool finish from Kevin Boffy.

As Rovers went in search of the vital three points they needed, Easson had to be alert on several occasions to keep out a lively visiting attack.

Just as it looked like the plaudits and the silverware were on their way to Lion, up popped that man Ord to forever print his name in the annals of Sunday League history and extend the season for another week.

The two sides will now meet each other in a championship showdown at the King George playing fields, on Tuesday, May 18, at 6.15pm.

Lion Hillcarter 5 Athletic Rugby 0

Lion knew what they had to do and they effortlessly disposed of Athletic Rugby.

The hosts took an early lead when Chris I'Anson showed a smart turn of foot before firing home past Andy Ruddock.

I'Anson soon grabbed his second to double Lion's advantage, before a great strike from Lee Dixon gave the home side a three-goal buffer.

After the interval chances were created in abundance and it was no surprise when Stuart Dixon drilled a low shot into the onion bag.

Rob Ferguson headed home the final goal of the game following a pinpoint cross from the excellent Anthony Lund to make the points, and the game, safe for Lion.

A solid performance from the former champions which puts them in good order for the winner-takes-all clash of the titans next week.

Best for Athletic were Marc Batey, Michael Harrison and Mark Taylor.

Division Two

Clarendon 6 Workingmen's Club 1

Clarendon ended their season in style with an excellent win.

The home side took an early advantage when young predator, Lee Connor, smashed home a Mark Hughes-style volley from one of Steve Hollis' metronomic deliveries.

Workies hit back through a somewhat fortuitous goal, which resembled Sammy Igoe's against Hartlepool, for Swindon, last week.

Jonathan Hayes' cross evaded everyone and the ball somehow found its way into the far corner of Stuart Morrow's net for the equalising goal.

Clarries roared back and Hollis grabbed the second goal, heading home after a superb flowing move.

The same player then increased the lead with a competent finish from the penalty spot, before Chris Barlow chalked his eleventh of the campaign with a firm header from Aidan Trimble's cross.

Jamie Turner added the fifth when Paul Jewson played him through and he coolly lifted the ball over the advancing keeper, Jamie Bell, and into the back of the net.

Hollis rounded off the afternoon by completing his treble, when he rounded off a surging run through the middle of the park, beating three players, before taking the ball past Bell and rolling the ball into an empty net.

Best for the Clarendon were Hollis, Turner and Connor, while for Workies, David Waller, John Wilson and Lee Aird shone.
