A NORTH-East MP is writing to the Football Association to try to save the jobs of 95 workers at a Darlington engineering company.

Darlington MP Alan Milburn is contacting the FA to see if it can help in the dispute between Cleveland Bridge and the main contractors at the Wembley Stadium project, Multiplex.

This week, 95 Cleveland Bridge workers were told they would lose their jobs and that the 100 or so remaining staff would work shorter hours.

The losses followed an announcement on Monday that Cleveland Bridge was stopping work at the stadium and was issuing legal proceedings against Multiplex.

Yesterday, a meeting was held between Mr Milburn, representatives from trade unions GMB and Amicus, Cleveland Bridge and Councillor John Williams, the leader of Darlington Borough Council.

A meeting has been scheduled for next Thursday to see if progress has been made.

Mr Milburn said: "Cleveland Bridge also told me that they believe very firmly this is an issue of national concern."
