THE goals were not exactly flying in, but the points were dropping into the bag as Darlington got their new Coca Cola League Two campaign off to an encouraging start this week.

A Craig Liddle equaliser at Yeovil Town earned Quakers a point on Tuesday night after a late Ian Clark strike had been enough to secure all three points at home to Grimsby Town last Saturday.

Manager David Hodgson, who admits his side is in need of a striker, made two changes for the long trip to Huish Park and was rewarded with an improved performance.

Former Middlesbrough defender Curtis Fleming made his debut for the club after recovering from an ankle injury. He replaced Brian Close, while Mark Convery made way for Neil Wainwright, who set up the winner after coming on as a substitute against the Mariners.

Quakers started badly and the Glovers went ahead through Phil Jevons after just six minutes, but the visitors fought back well and Liddle met Craig Russell's corner to head in the equaliser from close range eight minutes into the second half.

It was a much more solid display from Darlington, who had looked vulnerable against Grimsby. Until substitute Clark's vital contribution, goalkeeper Sam Russell was the hero for the home side as he rescued them with several excellent saves.

The game appeared to be heading for a stalemate when Wainwright picked up the ball and found Clark, who rifled a powerful first-time shot into the top corner from the left edge of the penalty area.

Quakers will hope to keep their unbeaten start going when they visit Kidderminster Harriers tomorrow.

Their hosts have started with two 0-0 draws against sides relegated last season - at Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday and at home to Notts County on Tuesday.
