A NEW book about St Cuthbert has been launched at his resting place in Durham Cathedral.

Sister Helen Julian, an Anglican nun of the Society of St Francis, wrote The Lindisfarne Icon: St Cuthbert and the 21st Century Christian, which has been published by the Bible Reading Fellowship.

It was launched at the SPCK Bookshop in the cathedral, which is where the saint's remains were taken 900 years ago by monks fleeing the Vikings.

Bookshop manager Carole Burrows said: "St Cuthbert was a missionary in his lifetime and used to go out and meet and talk to people.

"He was a great inspiration to people in his lifetime.

"The book explores why he was so influential and looks at his influence today."

She said that the book, which costs £6.99, had been selling well because it is the anniversary of the saint's remains being brought to the cathedral.
