AN angler exceeded the permitted catch by almost double the limit on a water company reservoir, a court was told.

John Milburn's excess of 15 trout over the permitted bag limit of eight cost him £200 in fines and costs, plus a year-long ban from Northumbrian Water fisheries.

He was caught during a routine patrol by a fishing warden on Grassholme Reservoir, in Teesdale, County Durham, on August 27.

A spot check revealed Milburn had a total catch of 23 fish, Paul Kelly, prosecuting, told Bishop Auckland magistrates.

"The actions of Mr Milburn were more akin to a fishmonger than someone fishing for pleasure," said Mr Kelly.

"The number of fish taken over the limit is one of the highest Northumbrian Water's wardens have ever come across.

"Substantial efforts have been made by Northumbrian Water to make Grassholme Reservoir a successful still water trout fishery.

"Its continued success is dependent upon anglers complying with the fishing rules."

Mr Kelly added that the theft of fish remains a serious problem as it reduces the stocks and, thereby, spoils the enjoyment of law-abiding anglers.

Milburn, of Glenside Villas, Thornley, east Durham, pleaded guilty by letter to poaching the 15 excess trout.

He was fined £125 and ordered to pay £75 costs. He was also banned from all Northumbrian Water fisheries for 12 months, from the date of the offence, in August.
