A MAN barred from town centre shops because of his abusive behaviour threatened to kill the council officer responsible for the ban, a court heard.

Brian Birmingham, 24, the subject to an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) brought by Stockton Borough Council, made threats towards Sharon Carr, saying she ruined his life.

Teesside Crown Court heard how Birmingham was talking to his probation officer when he said: "I don't want to kill anybody but I have no option. I want her dead. I hate Sharon Carr."

He then said he had thought about running over Miss Carr, an Asbo senior officer, and had been watching her.

Dan Cordey, prosecuting, said Birmingham thought he was talking in confidence to his probation officer, but the woman was so shocked by what she heard that she told police.

Birmingham was made the subject to the Asbo on March 18 after repeated complaints from traders in Stockton. He was barred from entering the town's Castlegate Centre and Wellington Square shopping complex.

Birmingham, of Alder Road, Stockton, admitted a charge of making a threat to kill on May 11.

Christopher Baker, for Birmingham, said he made the comments about Miss Carr to try to get help. He had an appalling upbringing and was addicted to drink and drugs.

Recorder Andrew Sutcliffe sentenced Birmingham to 12 months in prison, but said he would serve half, with the remaining six months suspended. After release, he would then be supervised on licence.
