PLANS to demolish a former ambulance station and build 14 flats on the site have been approved by councillors.

Meadowcroft Homes Limited applied to build the flats with car parking and landscaping in Clarence Avenue, Chester-le-Street.

The accommodation will be arranged in two blocks, one three storeys high, the other four storeys.

The layout will preserve mature trees on the site, which are protected by a Tree Preservation Order.

There were no objections to the development, which was granted outline permission in April.

The Highways Authority confirmed that the proposed amount of car parking, one dedicated space for each flat, was acceptable, bearing in mind the town centre location.

Chester-le-Street District Council's planning committee meeting endorsed the proposals, subject to an agreement by the developers to contribute £7,000 to the authority for outdoor recreational space.
