CROONER Alvin Stardust has recruited dozens of young performers to star in his latest show.

Mr Stardust, best known for his Seventies hits My Coo-Ca-Choo and the chart-topping Jealous Mind, visited Durham to meet members of the recently-reformed Consett Theatre Workshop Juniors. The youngsters will be backing singers when he performs his Rockin' around the Christmas Tree show at the Empire Theatre, Consett on November 17.

Margaret Darroch, who reformed the junior workshop earlier this year, said: "He was very charming, a really nice guy. The kids are really looking forward to performing with him, it will be a real treat."

Mrs Darroch and the workshop are also working on a production of the musical Stepping Out, in partnership with the Jane Robson School of Dance, that will be performed at the Empire next spring.

Mr Stardust, who is currently starring in The Phantom Of The P'opera, Billingham Forum, Teesside, said: "The best part for us is working with the kids, as they really enjoy being involved, and show it every time they go out on stage."

Tickets for the show are £14, or £12 for concessions, and are available on (01207) 218171.
