A NEWSAGENT is recovering from the shock of being targeted by raiders twice over the festive period.

Maynews manager Julie Thirsk was woken at 3.40am on New Year's Eve after raiders triggered an alarm when they forced their way into her shop and and stole cigarettes and chocolate.

The shop in The Square, Stamford Bridge, near York, was also targeted in a crash-and-grab raid less than two weeks earlier when a vehicle was driven into the door of the building to steal cigarettes.

"It was a brand new door, put in after the last burglary. It is not the best New Year's present I could have asked for," said Ms Thirsk.

"It is supposed to be a quiet village. A lot of people are shocked about it. Customers coming in cannot believe it."

In September, the shop was broken into twice and shutters were installed inside the windows and metal barriers put on the door.

"We are not sure at the moment if it is the same people, but each time it is a similar kind of thing," said Ms Thirsk.

She said the company would now apply to have bollards outside the shop and shutters fitted outside.
