A CINEMA has withdrawn an advertisement for condoms after it was shown before the Magic Roundabout movie.

The move comes after student Kay McKennie visited Vue Cinema, Hartlepool, with six-year-old godson Jonathan Usher to watch the remake of the children's classic.

She said she was gobsmacked when Jonathan starting spelling out the word condom as he watched adverts before the film.

A spokesman for Vue Cinema said: "Vue apologises for any offence that may have been caused. The advertisement appeared briefly as a still slide before the main trailers.

"Following this complaint, we have withdrawn the advert from all children's showings and highlighted this notification to our advertising company to ensure it does not happen again."

Ms McKennie, 25, said: "Jonathan is that age where he is spelling everything out. As each advert came up, he spelled it out. I was in the middle of texting my boyfriend when I heard him say the first three letters of the word.

"I looked up and could not believe it. It was an advert advertising condoms.

"Jonathan asked me what it meant. I was gobsmacked. The Magic Roundabout is a U certificate, so why on earth are they advertising condoms?"

Ms McKennie complained to the cinema manager after the film had finished.

She said: "I am all for safe sex, but not when it is shown to six-year-olds. It was a totally inappropriate advert to show before a U-rated film."
