A LOVELORN wallaby has been left home alone after her mate left the nest.

Two-year-old wallaby Will went walkabout from his home near Hartlepool after an intruder left the gate to his enclosure open a week ago.

The intrepid marsupial hopped out of the enclosure he shared with mate Mary.

Beverley Keenan, who keeps the two animals at her home in Elwick, said three-year-old Mary - who is pregnant - is anxiously awaiting Will's return.

She said: "She has been very distressed since he left. She's been pacing around waiting for him to come back - it is very sad to see her like this."

Since his escape, Will has been spotted several times near the A19 dual carriageway between Hartlepool and Stockton.

Although the wallaby, a smaller relative of the kangaroo, can easily survive in the wild feeding off vegetation, Beverley said the biggest concern was the animal's safety.

Mrs Keenan, and her husband, Andrew, took Will in a year ago and got Mary eight months later to keep him company.

Their home is a menagerie of animals including rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.

She said: "Wallabies are wonderful animals.

"They are very sensitive and shy but a real joy to watch."

Anyone who sees Will is urged not to approach him, but to contact Mrs Keenan on 07736 610007 or call the RSPCA or police.

Mrs Keenan is also appealing for anyone with expertise in safely trapping wild animals to get in touch.
