A DAY care centre has vowed to fight back against thieves, after their annual pantomime was disrupted by the latest break-in.

Coverdale Day Care Centre in Darlington, is replacing thousands of pounds of equipment after thieves raided the building in January.

Computers, musical equipment and cameras were taken the night before their performance of Dick Whittington, threatening to cancel the show.

Last-minute improvisation saved the day, with parents helping to provide music, and karaoke machines were used instead of theatre sound equipment.

It was the fourth burglary in five years. Essential equipment worth thousands of pounds, and cash was stolen on each occasion. Centre manager Robert Large said staff and users would not be deterred by the setbacks.

He said: "Each time we've had a break-in, they've trashed the place. It's been quite awful for everyone involved.

"Last time, it was especially bad being so close to the pantomime, and all our music was on the computers that were stolen.

"But we all worked together, and everyone said it was one of the best shows we've ever done here."

The centre has not yet replaced all the equipment.

"Everyone here is brilliant, and really supports each other, and already we're looking forward to our pantomime next year, but hopefully without the setbacks," said Mr Large.
