DAVID Hodgson last night insisted his relationship with Clyde Wijnhard is stronger than ever and has backed the Dutch striker to return to his best in Darlington's play-off pursuit, writes Lee Hall.

Hodgson was unhappy with Wijnhard's attitude in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Orient, substituting the nine-goal forward after just 31 minutes.

Wijnhard made a blistering start to his Quakers career, scoring four goals in his first five games, but has netted just twice in his last 13 outings.

Hodgson is confident the 31-year-old will come good in the crucial run-in.

"I think the world of Clyde and I hope I never have to make that decision again," said Hodgson. "I get on exceptionally well with him and at times he is outstanding. At other times he has let us down, but he is a big player for us.

"When he is on-song, like he was against Swansea, we are a different team.

"Every striker has a rough patch, but I know Clyde, and I know he will be determined to set the record straight."

However, Wijnhard will not get that chance to rectify the situation against Boston tomorrow as he serves a one-match ban. Craig Russell is expected to earn a rare start.

"Clyde isn't playing on Saturday, so I had nothing to lose by taking him off against Orient," said Hodgson. "I had an awful lot to gain by putting my trust and belief in Craig Russell at such an early stage of the game."

Russell has yet to score in 23 appearances this season and Hodgson added: "A goal would have done Craig's confidence a lot of good, but I don't think anyone was going to score after the way we played."

With Alun Armstrong and Neil Wainwright also suspended tomorrow, Hodgson's attacking options are severely limited.
