ORIGINAL 1945 VE Day bunting was among the treasures found in the attic of Darlington's longest established shop last week after they had been forgotten for almost 60 years.
Starling and Godfrey owner Philip Tarry came across the bunting while he was clearing out the top floor of the gentleman's outfitters.
He also found plastic rotating price tags in pounds, shillings and pence with their original packaging, as well as a clock awarded to Stan Godfrey in 1930 for the best-dressed window.
Mr Tarry was cleaning the attic of his shop in Post House Wynd, also known as The Men's Shop, in preparation for his retirement this spring, when the shop will close.
He said: "The bunting is really interesting - it was made at a time when they tried to conserve everything so it has been made out of thin material which has been painted.
"The Soviet Union flag is also included, which is a little ironic when you think that the Cold War started not long afterwards. But they still were our allies on VE Day.
"I don't know where it has come from - maybe Mr Godfrey brought them in after he was demobbed.
"Sadly, I have no use for them, but I would like all of them to go to a good home.
"It's the 60th anniversary of VE Day this year so maybe a museum would like to display the bunting this year as part of their celebrations."
