EGGLESCLIFFE School's under-16 boys' hockey team have qualified for the latter stages of the national schools competition after being crowned North-East champions last Sunday.
After negotiating some tough opposition in the local rounds, including Richmond School and Red House School, Egglescliffe defeated Royal Grammar School, Gateshead 10-0 in the Cleveland, Durham and Northumberland final.
They then met Hall Cross School from Doncaster in the North-East final in Thirsk.
Egglescliffe took a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes after some excellent play and, although Hall Cross began to impose themselves on the game, Egglescliffe weathered the storm.
They began to regain control and reached the half-time break leading 4-0.
Hall Cross halved the deficit within the first five minutes of the second half, but Egglescliffe moved up a few gears and scored another three before the end to qualify for the national quarter and semi-finals at Warwick University on Sunday, March 13.
The successful boys are Michael Shepherd, Joel Cordes, Ben Gerner, Phil Yates, Stuart Johnson, James Turton, Chris Hepworth, Ollie Stoddart, Ollie Clark, Dean Tate, Simon Broadway, Andy Forster, Will Horner, Adam Holland and Joe Barker.
