HUNDREDS of girls will compete in an annual football tournament later this month.
Players will take part in seven-a-side matches on half-size pitches at Durham University's Graham Sports Centre, at Maiden Castle, Durham, on Tuesday, March 15.
Durham County Council expects the biggest-ever entry for the tournament.
About 600 pupils from almost 60 primary school teams, and 200 players from 20 secondary sides across the county have signed up for the competition.
Games will be staged for year six primary teams on a round-robin basis in 12 groups, between 9.45am and noon, with qualifiers going through to the finals in June.
Year seven girls will compete in the secondary schools tournament, from 1pm, with semi-finals at 3.15pm and the final at 3.30pm.
Helen Goodrum, of the council's PE and sport advisory unit, said: "In terms of growth, football is fast becoming a must-do sport for girls and women.
"The tournament is a great opportunity for hundreds of youngsters."
