FARMERS in the Darlington area are being urged to sign up to a cut-price crime prevention scheme before it's too late.

Rural watch group Countryside Alert is backing the SmartWater project, which is being supported by Darlington Police and Neighbourhood Watch.

Farmers can buy a SmartWater kit worth £100 for only £20 in a scheme which runs out next Friday.

There are two forms of SmartWater - one which can be used on property, the other which sprays intruders.

Each kit's chemical make-up is unique, so markings can be linked to a specific farm.

Darlington crime reduction officer PC Steve Rich said: "Because SmartWater is unique, like a barcode, this is a good opportunity for local farmers to protect their property."

Organisation founder Brian Pavey said: "If someone breaks into a farm, they could end up being sprayed with SmartWater or taking items which can be traced back to the farm if they are recovered by the police.

"This scheme is a further deterrent to wrongdoers and we are happy to support it."

Anyone wanting to buy a kit can contact Jacqui Snowball, at Neighbourhood Watch, on (01325) 346832. Countryside Alert members can contact Mr Pavey on 07768 934188.

Countryside Alert has organised a 4.5 mile cross-country race on Sunday, April 3, starting at Barmpton, near Darlington. Funds raised will be split between Countryside Alert and the Royal British Legion.

The Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Roderick Francis, will start the race and present prizes. For details, contact Mr Pavey.
