A PUB will open until midnight after being granted a new licence.

The Falchion public house in Blackwellgate, Darlington, was granted an entertainment licence by Darlington Borough Council yesterday.

Landlord Stephen Murray wants a DJ to perform on Friday and Saturday nights and wants karaoke on Sunday nights.

The new licence, for music, singing and dancing, will also allow Mr Murray to introduce bands and singers if there is a demand.

He told the licensing committee that he and his partner, who helps to run the pub, had a strict anti-drugs policy and had bought a drugs box, which contains gloves, should any needles be discovered.

The licence will start from April 5.

The pub will open from 11am to midnight on Monday through to Saturday and from noon to 10.30pm on Sunday, or noon to midnight on Sundays preceding bank holidays.

Granting the licence, committee chairwoman Isobel Hartley said: "You have demonstrated a responsible attitude, you will conform to police guidelines and you are doing everything you can to prevent public disorder."
