THREE candidates will be fighting for two seats in an Easington District Council by-election today.

Two Labour Party candidates and a representative of the British National Party will be seeking election for two of the three seats in the Wingate Ward.

David Chaytor, of Trimdon Station, and Robert Taylor, of Wingate, will be hoping to boost Labour's seats to 44. BNP member David Walton, of Station Town, is also seeking election.

The by-election was called after John Higgins, who had represented the ward since May 2003, resigned last year.

A second councillor, Henry Devine, who was elected in May 1999, lost his seat after failing to attend the required number of council meetings over a year.

Easington Council is at present led by the Labour Party which holds 42 seats, with two Lib Dems, and four Independents.
