NATURALISTS are calling for a fresh look at the way formal parks and gardens in towns and cities are managed.
The Yorkshire Naturalists' Union (YNU) says if green areas are looked after properly, their value for residents can be greatly increased.
It cites Harrogate's Valley Gardens and York's Victoria Cemetery as important examples of urban green spaces.
YNU secretary John Newbould said: "Many of these parks were carved out of the open countryside or private estates.
"With much of our wider countryside subject to intrusive agriculture and creeping development, our parks and gardens are becoming even more important reservoirs of our rich natural heritage.
"By careful and sympathetic management, local councils can increase that value."
