A REAL life Jim'll Fix It has been nominated as a Neighbour from Heaven at the age of 89 for taking on the community's odd jobs.

Cyril Bayles, from Wykes Close, in Sedgefield, mows lawns, goes shopping and fixes furniture for the residents of 20 houses, despite celebrating his 89th birthday today.

Neighbour Stan Webb, 62, has known Cyril for more than 20 years and said that this "true gentleman" is a real Neighbour from Heaven.

Mr Webb said: "I had a broken ankle and for three months he looked after me. He took the bins out, did some shopping.

"He is the same with everyone on the close. Everyone in Sedgefield knows him - he's a true gentleman and there's not many of those left."

Mr Webb first met Mr Bayles 30 years ago when he was trained by him on what is now United Buses.

He said: "He was like a mentor. He was a real prankster back then and he still likes to make people laugh."

Mr Bayles said: "It has always been my nature to help people.

"I'm reasonably fit, why not put it to good use?"

Mr Bayles will be presented with a Neighbour from Heaven certificate and is in with a chance of winning the grand prize - a £1,500 holiday, courtesy of The Cruise Store.

If he wins, Mr Webb will receive £250 worth of holiday vouchers.

To nominate someone for the award, known as an Obsa (Outstanding Behaviour Special Award), which is the opposite of an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (Asbo), send your entry to: Northern Echo Neighbours from Heaven, Priestgate, Darlington, DL1 1NF.
