A £4.2m sheltered housing scheme has been completed.

The Parkside Court development has been built on the site of a former local authority sheltered housing scheme off Cumbernauld Road, in Thornaby.

It consists of 31 two-bedroomed apartments and 17 two-bedroomed bungalows.

An on-site care team will be operated by the Anchor Trust and will provide 24-hour care and support for tenants.

The scheme is designed to enable older people to continue living in their own homes.

Stockton Borough Council, which owned the land, will be funding the care team and it is hoped many of their original tenants will be rehoused within the scheme.

Steve Houghton, of Anchor Trust's, said: "About 40 per cent of the tenants here will have high level care needs whilst others will have little or no care needs, however, the very fact that such 24-hour care is available and readily accessible, provides huge security to all the tenants."
