A RUGBY player is gathering support for a charity march to York dressed as a Roman gladiator.

Front row forward Stuart Simpson visited Middleton Tyas Primary School to tell children about the hike.

Mr Simpson, 34, of Tunstall, near Richmond, will be joined by soldiers from Catterick Garrison for the trip from Richmond on March 25.

"It is always said that a Roman soldier could walk 50 miles in a day and we want to prove that theory," said Mr Simpson, a member of Richmondshire Rugby Club.

Money raised from the event will be split between Cancer Research and local sports clubs, including Richmond Hockey Club, Richmond Dales Swimming Club, Richmond Cricket Club and Richmond Town Football Club.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Mr Simpson or take part in the walk is asked to call (01748) 818327.
