LEARNING new computer skills has opened up long-forgotten family memories for a North-East pensioner.

Tom Dowson, 79, traced the grave of his uncle, a soldier from Crook, in County Durham, also called Tom, who was killed fighting in France during the First World War.

Tutors on a Have a Go course at Bishop Auckland College's Community Learning Centre, in the Newgate Centre, encouraged Mr Dowson to research his ancestor's history on the Internet.

Through a Commonwealth Commission website he was able to find the 21-year-old Durham Light Infantryman's grave in Etaples, Northern France, and find out where and when he was killed

Mr Dowson, who served with the Fleet Air Arm in the Second World War, said: "It is amazing what you can find out on the web, but you have to remain focused or you can end up going round in circles.

"I really enjoy coming to the centre as it keeps my brain active. The staff are very patient, which is great for older people like me."

Mr Dowson is now studying for a full City and Guilds information technology qualification.
