A teenager has been killed after being hit by a fire engine on its way to a 999 call last night.

The 17-year-old boy stepped into the path of the appliance on the Queen Alexandra Bridge in Sunderland at around 9.15pm.

Two fire engines, both with blue lights flashing and sirens sounding, were responding to an emergency call when the incident happened.

The teenager, who had been out walking with two girls, was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
