Darlington is likely to add its support to a national campaign to tackle climate change.
A draft declaration will be reviewed by the town's Environmental Forum at a meeting this evening.
John Buxton, the borough council's director of environment, said: "Climate change is one of the biggest threats facing the Earth.
"Localities have a role to play in tackling the climate change. He said Nottingham council had already issued a declaration promising to develop a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and that it would beneficial for Darlington to do the same.
If the declaration is approved, organisations and companies throughout the borough will be asked to sign.
The forum meeting takes place at 7pm, in Darlington Town Hall.
