FIREFIGHTERS spent three hours tackling a house blaze believed to have been deliberately started in the early hours of yesterday.
It is suspected that youths broke into the derelict property in Merrybent Drive, Darlington, and set it alight. Two fire pumps attended at about 1.20am.
Crew manager Robin Turnbull said: "When we got there the fire had been burning for a decent amount of time but there was very little inside.
"The fire was in the ceiling, in the roof void, and we spent a lot of time raking through the boarding. Probably some kids had been inside but the property is due to be demolished anyway."
A crew returned during the day to ensure the blaze was out and the building was safe.
