SCHOOLCHILDREN got into the spirit of World Book Day by dressing up as famous literary characters.

Pupils at Polam Hall School, Darlington, dressed up as some of their favourite Shakespearean characters, including Romeo, Macbeth and Cleopatra.

The fancy dress day was followed by a book fair.

Angela Foster, junior school headteacher, said: "We always do something special for World Book Day and this year has been brilliant, with the girls dressing up as their favourite Shakespearean characters.

"It's important that our pupils realise reading books and plays really can be enormous fun.
