TWO Teesside students narrowly missed out on winning a national design innovation award at the weekend.

Lisa Richardson, left, and Rebecca Hurst, both pupils at Bydales Secondary School, in Redcar, displayed their designs for a glove torch and automatic plant watering system at Audi Design Foundation's National Innovation Awards.

The pair, both 12, joined 22 other finalists from across the UK at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium last Friday night.

Lisa designed a glove torch that responds to hand movements and Rebecca came up with an automatic plant watering device.

Rebecca was inspired by her grandmother, who was going on holiday and needed someone to water her garden.

Hertfordshire's Ravenscroft School claimed the £2,000 top prize with a "smart shopper" device.
