David Simcock is contemplating a crack at the Norfolk Stakes with Classic Encounter after the son of Lujain sped to victory in the turftours.com ''Come To The Irish Derby'' Maiden Stakes at Newmarket yesterday.

Simcock's charge took the eye when finishing third on his recent debut at Windsor.

But that effort was nothing compared to the sizzling display he served up in this five-furlong contest as he never let any of his 11 rivals get in a blow.

Richard Hughes popped the even-money favourite out of the stalls and before the rest knew it, the colt had gone clear.

Indeed, from the halfway point it was only a question of how far he would win rather than 'if'.

In the end, the victory margin was five lengths and the time was smart as well to leave connections contemplating whether to go to the Group Three at Royal Ascot at York next month.

The locally-based Simcock said: ''Richard says we can go for the Norfolk Stakes. It's an option - a fast five like York will suit him down to the ground.

''It's not a definite but we'll definitely think about it after going home and watching the race again.''

Certainly, Classic Encounter looks a very exciting prospect for Simcock, a second-season handler who served as an assistant to both Luca Cumani and Ian Balding.

He added: ''He's a really nice horse with a lovely nature."
