A THRIVING girls' football team is at the forefront of the growth in the women's game.

The rapid progress of Lumley Ladies mirrors the surge of interest and participation in female football in recent years.

Formed only three years ago, the club has 120 registered players, from under-eights to seniors, and fields teams in everything from Durham County Council/FA mini-leagues to the women's Northern League.

Last season's roll of honour included the under-13s Tyne-Tees league and cup double, while last weekend the under-14s wrapped up the Saturday mini-league, before winning their age group at the Morley Spurs tournament, in Leeds, on Sunday.

The club's name is spreading far and wide, with recent matches against touring Canadian and US sides, and the Dutch national team.

Senior squad members are also counting down the days before flying to Florida, to take part in a tournament in Orlando, next month.

The club's efforts were recognised with the award of FA Charter status last year, followed by the recent runner-up award in FA Charter Club of the Year competition.

Under-13 team manager Ian Kirkup was also runner-up in the FA Charter coaches' category.

Secretary Dennis Price said: "We try to offer opportunities, not only on the playing side, but in other aspects of the game, like refereeing and coaching.

"We've put a dozen parents and players through the first stage refereeing qualification and we're going to offer similar opportunities in coaching."

Players are welcome to join training for 12-year-olds and under, at Park View CA, Roman Road, Chester-le-Street, on Wednesdays, and over-12s at Roseberry Sports and Community College, at Newfield, near Pelton, on Thursdays, both from 6pm to 8pm.
