A LOST walker was found by a North-East rescue team with the help of his mobile phone.

Teesdale and Weardale Search and Rescue team found the 21-year-old man from Surrey on Wednesday.

He had been walking on the Pennine Way from Dufton to Alston when he became lost on Knock Fell, an area of bleak moorland, west of Cow Green reservoir in Upper Teesdale, County Durham.

He used his mobile phone to call police, who called out the fell rescuers.

Team leader Dave Bartles-Smith said: "I was able to contact the man and he told me he was lost in limited visibility.

"It became clear that he had missed a right-hand turn in the footpath and was heading down into Teesdale.

"I asked him to follow a stream until he came to a remote abandoned farm called Moor House. Once he was able to describe the farm, it was a simple matter of directing him along a track where a team vehicle picked him up."

This is the third recent incident where walkers have wandered off the path and got lost. Rescuers recommend walkers always carry full-size maps and a compass.
