A SEWERAGE plant that serves more than 20,000 County Durham households is undergoing a £1.5million upgrade.

Northumbrian Water is upgrading the sludge treatment process at Tudhoe Mill sewage treatment works at Tudhoe, near Spennymoor, County Durham.

The process will reduce the volume of water in the sludge left after wastewater treatment, making it easier to handle and reducing amounts for transportation and disposal.

The work, which began earlier this month, will take up to six months to complete.

Tudhoe Mill sewage treatment works treats up to 715,000 litres of wastewater every hour from more than 22,000 customers in Tudhoe, Spennymoor, Sunderland Bridge, Croxdale, Hett, West Cornforth and Ferryhill.

Andy Downer, project manager, said the scheme would lead to efficiencies and improvements to the treatment process and has environmental benefits.

He said construction traffic will access the site via St Charles Road and everything will be done to keep disruption to a minimum.

The company says representatives will not need to gain access to any homes during the work so unexpected callers identity should be checked carefully.
