DESPITE the doom and gloom surrounding the credit crunch, a baby hospice charity has received a welcome boost.

Zoe’s Place, in Normanby, Middlesbrough, was given a cheque for £20,000 after a businessman read of its financial woes.

Staff at Simon Carves Ltd, on the Wilton site, near Redcar, east Cleveland, contacted the charity to offer support through the a fundraising shortage.

Mark Guidery, chief executive of the charity, said: “They heard about us having to cancel our annual charity ball and said they wanted to help. They went off to see what they could do and have now contacted me to say they want to donate £20,000.

“They also have other ideas to promote the hospice. It is great when a recession is starting to bite that a big company is helping a small charity.”
