AROUND 10,000 homes in the North-East and North Yorkshire were without power for much of the day today.

A spokesman for electricity company NEDL said engineers had managed to restore the supply to most homes, but were being hampered by the weather.

Engineers used helicopters to locate faults in the network.

Homes in Scarborough, Whitby, Kirkbymoorside and the North York Moors were affected.

David Gill, head of customer services at NEDL, said: "Obviously, this isn't the first time bad weather has hit our region, so we have well-rehearsed emergency plans in place, and restoring power to our customers is our top priority.

"We have adequate resources for the work, but snow is making it difficult for our engineers to access the affected parts of our electricity network as, even using our four wheel drive vehicles, we are finding it difficult to access the more remote higher locations.

"We are using helicopters where possible to locate the more remote faults, but we have to ask our customers to be patient whilst our staff battle against the elements to get the lights back on."
