Three people had to be rescued after becoming trapped by the incoming tide at a notorious cut-off point at the base of the cliffs at Saltburn, east Cleveland.
The group, a man and two women, were staying in nearby Staithes for the weekend.
They were walking along part of the Cleveland way towards Saltburn when they ended up at the base of Huntcliff with the tide flooding in.
Redcar's two RNLI lifeboats were launched at 2.15pm yesterday and they were joined by the Staithes lifeboat, which was already at sea.
The Redcar IB1 class lifeboat Jacky Hunsley was driven in towards the base of the cliffs and the trapped persons brought aboard the lifeboat and landed back on the beach at Saltburn.
Dave Cocks, deputy launching authority at Redcar lifeboat station, said: "Because they were from outside the area, it's understandable that they may not have been familiar with this stretch of coastline.
"The position they were rescued from is a notorious cut-off point. Dozens of people have been trapped there over the years. The simplest thing to do to keep out of trouble is to check the tides before setting out to walk along the cliffs."
