Ofsted drops rating for County Durham school to 'good'

Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Byermoor, attended by 234 pupils aged 4 to 11, had previously been classified as 'outstanding' nine years ago.

Despite dropping from its previous outstanding rating, the school continues to excel in many areas - specifically in terms of behaviour, attitudes and personal development, which remained outstanding following inspection.

Inspectors found that pupils are "happy, polite, and inquisitive," expressing "pride in their learning and school community."

Staff were praised for prioritising student care and safety, with students remarked upon as being "exceptionally well-mannered" who look after each other.

The leadership at the school was commended for setting high expectations, contributing to a positive learning environment and nurturing pupils spiritually, socially, emotionally, and academically.

The successful implementation of an engaging school curriculum, which caters to all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), was also appreciated.

Inspectors mentioned that a "new phonics curriculum introduced since 2021 has positively impacted early reading skills."

In the early years provision, inspectors found reception children "enjoy a well-resourced learning environment" where staff model "adventurous vocabulary" and foster a love for books.

The "exemplary behaviour and attitudes" of pupils were noted as enhancing the learning environment.

Lessons were observed to have minimal disruption and pupils were seen to have a clear understanding of other’s needs.

The report mentions a successful buddy system that helps younger children emulate positive behaviours.

Inspectors said that recently introduced subject curriculums "need to be securely embedded" and their impact "evaluated".
