Retail giant TKMaxx has announced the closure of a town centre store after revealing the opening date for a new retail park site last week.

The brand, famous for its collection of bargains, has announced it will close its Middlesbrough town centre site at Captain Cook Square on May 24.

A new store at Cleveland Retail Park will open at 10am the next day, on May 25.

The Northern Echo has contacted TKMaxx for a comment on the closure.

The news comes as a blow to the town centre which lost its Marks and Spencer store earlier this month when the shutters were pulled down for the final time after 122 years.

Last week it was announced the new retail park store will open on May 25, after the retailer submitted plans to open the new clothing and homeware shop in the former Outfit store at the retail park off the A1085 Trunk Road. 

According to the plans, the store will sell women's clothing, accessories, and shoes on the ground floor with men's and children's clothing and homeware on a new upper floor. ‘Click and collect’ will also be available.

Speaking to the Mirror in February Deborah Dolce, group director of TKMaxx owner TJX Europe, said: “We are proud of our continued investment in communities across the country through new store openings, store modernisations and relocations.

“Last year we opened two new stores – a TK Maxx in Bromborough and a Homesense in Altrincham.

A TKMaxx store in Edinburgh and two Homesense stories, one in Swansea and one at Manchester’s Arndale, have also been earmarked for closure this year.
