An 18-year-old has died after being struck by a BMW in the early hours of the morning.

The 18-year-old man was walking on a busy A-road shortly before 1.20am on Monday (March 27) morning when he was hit by a black BMW.

Emergency crews rushed to his aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, a man in his 40s, has been helping police with their enquiries and the 18-year-old’s family have been information and are being supported by specialist officers.

The incident happened on the eastbound carriageway of the A64 in North Yorkshire between the A659 at Tadcaster and A1237 at Askham Bryan.

The road remains closed into the afternoon while collision investigation and recovery work is carried out.

Police have now issued an appeal for witnesses, or anyone with dashcam footage, who may have witnessed the incident, or seen the BMW or pedestrian, to come forward.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We’re appealing to anyone in the area who may have seen the pedestrian, the black BMW or who has dashcam to come forward.

Anyone with any information or footage is urged to preserve the footage and contact us on 101 quoting reference 12230054266.”
