An abandoned dog who was wandering around Middlesbrough with a smashed and badly broken leg has been given a second chance and found its forever home.

Daisy, aged three, was found wandering around Middlesbrough and one of her hind legs was so badly smashed, the animal charity that rescued her feared their only option was to amputate it.

A member of the public found daisy and took her to a local vet practice who called in Middlesbrough Council.

Her limb was saved by vet Keith Stewart, a surgeon at Gilmoor Vets in Durham, who described her injury as one of the worst broken legs he has ever seen.

She was taken to Stray Aid’s own vets at their base in Coxhoe, where she was sedated and her badly broken leg was put into a support dressing.

X-rays, which were paid for by the generosity of wardens at Middlesbrough Council, showed she had snapped both her tibia and fibula, making her leg extremely unstable.

Due to the seriousness of the break and a lack of funds, the charity’s only option was going to be to amputate Daisy’s leg until Gilmoor Vets stepped in to offer their expertise at a discounted rate for the charity.

Now the adorable cocker spaniel has made an amazing recovery and has been rehomed.

Because Daisy was a stray, it is a mystery how she suffered such an appalling injury, and no one came forward to claim her as their pet.

She underwent surgery to pin and plate her hind leg at their main branch in Sunderland Road, Gilesgate, under the care of Keith, who is working towards his Certificate in Small Animal Surgery.
