Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was left with serious injuries after a car collided with a tree and wall.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the B6278 near Barnard Castle shortly before 5.30pm on Monday (January 25) after a deep-purple Ford Fiesta went into a wall and tree.

Three ambulances, three fire crews, police and the air ambulance all attended the scene.

Fire crews helped to free one casualty from a vehicle and two people were taken to hospital for treatment.

A man who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time remains at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough with serious injuries.

The road was closed for several hours while collision investigators worked at the scene.

The accident is said to have occurred close to the Marwood Riding Stables on the County Durham B-road, according to local reports.

Durham Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward following the accident to assist with their enquiries.

A force spokesperson said: “Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the car in the area around the time of the incident.

“Anyone with any information or dashcam footage is asked to contact Durham Roads and Armed Policing Unit on 0191-3752705, quoting incident number 312 of January 25.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the B6278 in Barnard Castle at 5.23pm on Wednesday (January 26). We dispatched three ambulance crews and a clinical team leader and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient was taken to James Cook Hospital and one patient was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital."
