Police have taken an escaped ferret into custody after the animal was spotted running around the streets after dark.

A beady-eyed officer from Durham City Police spotted a "strange beastie" running around on Sherburn Road, in Gilesgate, after dark on January 15.

After pursuing the creature on foot, the officer, Annabelle Chambers, realised the panicked animal was an escapee ferret - most likely a pet from a home in the area.

By a stroke of luck, a passing member of the public was an "expert ferret handling hero". With their assistance, Durham City Police captured a ferret following "a bit of a chase".

Though cousins of the ferret family, such as the polecat, do live wild in the UK, the "cinnamon" markings of this animal mean it is definitely a household pet.

The Police say that they are hoping for a "ferretail ending" for the escaped pet, and have made appeals for owners to come forward.

Durham City Police said: "If you have lost your ferret or know anyone who has, please email annabelle.chambers@durham.police.uk. We are keen for the ferret and its owner to be reunited forever."

The weasel escape artist is currently being looked after by Blue Ferret Boarding, which provides "luxury accommodation with ensuite facilities, formal suppers, and silver service" for ferrets whilst owners are on holiday.
