Emergency services attended the scene of a serious collision on a North East road yesterday which has left a man in hospital.

North Yorkshire Police (NYP) attended the scene at Sandsend near Whitby after receiving reports of a serious collision involving a motorcyclist on the A174.

The Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) has confirmed an ambulance and air ambulance attended the scene at East Row Bridge after the driver came off his bike.

A YAS spokesperson said the driver was taken by road ambulance to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

In a statement today, a YAS spokesperson said: We attended an incident on Monday (December 5) evening where a motorcyclist had come off his motorbike on East Row, close to the Hart Inn, in Sandsend. 

"An ambulance and the air ambulance were dispatched to the scene and one patient was taken by road ambulance to James Cook Hospital."

In a statement released earlier that day, an NYP spokesperson said: "We’re at the scene of a serious collision at Sandsend near Whitby.

"The A174 is currently closed at East Row Bridge while emergency services work at the scene.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible."

At 8:34pm, NYP announced the road had been reopened and traffic had resumed as normal.

Meanwhile, the road was closed as emergency services arrived and worked through the evening.

In the aftermath of the incident, police thanked the public for their patience while emergency services carried out their work.
