Flood warnings are in place across the region after heavy rain brought local transport services to a standstill. 

There is a yellow rain warning in place until 6pm on Friday across the region as persistent rain continues to fall for a second day. 

The Met Office said there will be a spell of persistent, and at times heavy rainfall will develop during Thursday, continuing on Friday, leading to a risk of flooding

Spray and flooding created difficult driving conditions and some road closures on Friday morning. 

In Darlington, motorists experienced flooding in Haughton Road, causing disruption to travel times and routes.

Maureen Laidlaw, who captured a picture of the flooded road, said she managed to navigate the tricky conditions slowly.

She said: “The cars coming towards us were trying to get on the other side of the road. It was really bad both directions. There was a sign up saying floods but that was it and you didn’t see it until you were just about on top of it.”

Elsewhere, pictures showed flooding outside the North Tees Hospital in Stockton on Thursday night as persistent heavy rainfall continued to fall throughout the night. 

The River Wear was close to bursting its banks in several areas throughout the North East, with water levels in Durham city particularly high on Thursday. 

LNER and LUmo were both running a limited service between Newcastle and Edinburgh on Friday morning due to damage to the railway lines near the Scottish Borders.
